[Travel] ¡Hola España! | Trip Planning

Tags

,

It’s Easter time! If you are studying in ang mo (westerners) countries, you will have loooooooong Easter holidays (yes one month!) XD So for my first ever so long Easter break, we three musketeers have decided on Spain! We originally wanted Germany, but then it was also time for us to look for second year accommodation and stuff. After serious consideration (you know la students ma money is a big constrain) we decided to dump our trip to Germany, but we still couldn’t get over with how we are going to spend our Easter just not going anywhere! So I started looking for relatively cheaper air tickets. And so as the title says Hola España! Iremos! (lol don’t even know if I used it correctly) I’m gonna share some of my experiences in planning my trip. Hope anything here would help anyone who would like to visit Madrid y Barcelona!

TRANSPORT

– Flight –

So first of all, we decided to go for 5 days, so we don’t want to have a lot of time wasted on travelling, so we picked to travel by plane! We went to look for flights on Google Flights, and then to the respective airlines’ websites to check for accurate prices (remember this cox Google Flights may have inaccurate prices that makes you go all excited and then when you found out you feel trolled LOLOL). In this case we settled with Norwegian and Ryanair.

Ryanair gave me a feeling of what you pay is what you get – cheap tickets but they have small aisles and stuffy plane. But I guess this is because of the weather and the air conditioner wasn’t on at a higher power. The landing was like a roller coaster – my heart pumped soooo fast that I for a few seconds – thought I was taking some extreme rides.

We had a good experience with Norwegian. They have much larger leg space and what more to ask for – free on board wifi.

– Train –

We flew from London Stansted, so it is just a few clicks away to booking a train for our trip to the airport – transport for London (tfl) is sooooo good I just love it! <3 You can purchase your train tickets here. And then print out train passes and you are done! Oh ya and one more thing, university students in the UK can apply for 16-25 railcard that can save u 1/3 on your train tickets! It can also be combined with Oyster card to enjoy a 1/3 off your tube rides (more small prints please find our yourself XD).

Between Madrid y Barcelona, we travelled by train (Renfe) as well. Travel time depends on the train if I’m not wrong. Ours took about 2.5 hours. With a slighhhhhhhht delay (only a few minutes lah XD). Another option would be travel by air but that’s up to you and your budget of course. HEH

– Metro –

There are a few different options to choose from. We got a day pass that includes outside of Madrid cox we wanted to visit Toledo. €17.80 per ticket. P/S: it is not a 24-hour ticket and ends at 2359 that day.

There is no one-day ticket in Barcelona, so we settled with 10-trip tickets and share among the three of us. *hint* the metro in both Madrid y Barcelona don’t have a ‘scan-in-scan-out’ system, which is to exit the station you don’t have to scan your ticket for another time, you just leave.

 HOTELS

There are so many websites that you can use to find a hotel. I personally quite like booking.com cox you don’t have to pay anything before you travel, and you can cancel your booking for free! (provided it is done within the specified time). However, prepaid hotels are not bad a choice – if you really want to stay in that hotel and stuff, so that you don’t have to bring so much cash with you (I don’t have a credit card so yeah). It’s up to your likings actually, there are so many accommodations to choose from, aided with reviews for your information. This wouldn’t be a problem I reckon. :D And another thing, I did not pay for any refundable deposits in both the accommodations I stayed in the two cities.

ENTRANCE TICKETS / PRE-BOOKINGS

– Madrid –

There is this restaurant called “Botin” in Madrid that says the oldest restaurant according to the Guinness Book of Record. It’s quite full when we reached. I don’t know if there are seats available had we not reserved seats beforehand. Hopefully there would be another blogpost for this restaurant in near future :X

– Barcelona –

Park Güell and La Sagrada Familia are two of the not-to-miss sites to visit in Barcelona. To prevent wasting time in queueing for tickets (and at a risk where you couldn’t get them at the time slot you want), it is best to just book beforehand. You can book your tickets for here(PG) and here (LSF).

We went to Sagrada Familia quite early in the morning, as we had our entry time 9:15-9:30, the queue wasn’t that bad. When we left around 12p.m. the queue was really long. So i really suggest you buy your tickets online beforehand. Do some planning first of course!

Park Güell is also another place where you would want to pre-buy tickets as they only allow a certain number of people in to the monumental zone at any one time.

Casa Batllo was another place we visited. We didn’t buy tickets beforehand. The queue wasn’t that bad, it took us about 15 minutes to buy our tickets. If you are willing to use your credit cards or what not you can buy them online on the spot cox they provide FREE wifi and in that case you don’t have to queue!

These are the few things we have done for our Spain trip. Hope they may be at least a little useful if you are looking for tips to travelling to Spain!

Will update with another post or two about how my trip turned out! And if there is anything I definitely recommend if you are to travel to Madrid y Barcelona.

Till then, much love from Elly xoxo

End of Second Term.

Being a Biology student, I feel busy at times, but when compared to other courses like Chem Eng or Mech Eng, I suddenly feel I’m exaggerating my schedule. To be honest, I actually have more than enough time to slowly and steadily complete my course work; maybe some revision on top of that. It’s all about time management. HA!

My Spring term just finished few days ago. It didn’t feel very long. In fact time passed by really quickly, day by day. After travelling a bit around the UK I studied for about a month for my February examinations. It felt like forever – sometimes I just have the kick to learn, sometimes I just feel like I should let it go XD. Nevertheless, hard work did pay off for a bit, got second upper for both papers. Though not what I aimed for, given the condition I was at during my exam, I guess that was not too bad :X

After spring term examinations, Msoc was getting more and more hardcore in rehearsals for our Mnight production in 8-9 March. Sometimes I felt lucky I joined just one performance; sometimes I wished I had joined the bamboo dance. Nah, it’s over anyway. It was unfortunate that our first night of performance was cancelled due to technical incident. Having said that, it made our second and one and only night much more magnificent and memorable. If you are wondering, Imperial College London Malaysian Society has one of the best Mnights across the UK. HAHA being all buey pai seh (unabashed) but you know #imperialpride is what we have XD. If you are wondering what we performed, you are more than welcomed to go to Youtube and search “Imperial College Malaysian Night 2015″ and enjoy yourselves LOLOL

Right after Mnight, it was Malaysian Society’s election for 15/16 committee. I actually hesitated for a few times after the pre-AGM briefing if I want to nominate myself to be one of the committees or not. I don’t know if I can do it, I don’t know if I can juggle between work and society’s commitments; at the same time I don’t want my university life to be filled with just academics, I did not do much in my college time that’s why I was trying to make the most out of time here. It’s only 3 years, and I know time flies. So I nominated myself, handed in my manifesto and attended AGM and Q&A session for my post – Ordinary Committee Member. I made it into the committee and there starts my busy time for the last week of my spring term. Conventions, talks and all. No doubt it was so tiring and was a rush to prepare for all these events, I learnt a lot.

I used to just mix with ah yin all the time, but I tried to open up my social circle. I learn to work more with different people. Though at times I find it really difficult to clique with a lot of people, but I am learning from everyone around me. I know I wouldn’t regret my decision.

Here are a few highlights of my Spring Term.

  1. Spring Examination.
  2. Chinese New Year dinner with Mich chan and EY.
  3. Mnight hardcore practices and performance.

  9. Execution of committee’s jobs, one of them is Easter Potluck! HAHA my very first event, with help of people around me. It was a success I felt HAHA! First time playing cherades, and I think I unleashed my secret talent there XD
  10. First time to Zone 3 and waited for late night bus to come back (fyi, zone 3’s tube closes slightly earlier than 12 a.m. I just learned it then), first time taking Barclays Cycle and cycled back to hostel at 1 a.m., it was £2 ok for a ride, quite expensive for me la but very exciting XD

 Until next time, Elly 합니다!

Eating Out: Urban Angel Café

Tags

, ,

Today is the last day of my first year winter break. I went travelling, and one of the places I have been was Edinburgh. I was brought to this cafe by my friend there, Agnes.

It’s called Urban Angel cafe. You can google map if you would like to visit one day! XD

Clean and simple facade!

Clean and simple facade!

This was what I saw when I first went in; busy workers, and FOOOOOOD

This was what I saw when I first went in; busy workers, and FOOOOOOD

They have a very warm and antique-looking interior, makes it look like a home to dine in.

Had brunch

Had brunch there and guess what? They serve brunch until 5pm! Isn’t that good?! Imagine you would like something savoury instead of teas and cakes in the afternoon.

I ordered this, eggs benedict with smoked salmon.

I ordered this, eggs benedict with organic smoked salmon.

I must say this is really goood! YUMS!

The eggs:

The poached eggs are just right, the yolks were not too watery nor solid. Most importantly not so sourrrrr!

The salmon:

Just lightly smoked, not so heavy for a brunch. And look, it’s actually a lot!

The buns:

No special comments on the buns, but they taste good with everything. So I guess that’s very much it? XD

I was actually quite impressed with this set of brunch, though it is a little pricey for me. If you refer to the menu, it’s £8.90 for this plate.

Scottish breakfast tea.

Scottish breakfast tea.

I couldn’t remember if this tea that I ordered was decaf-ed? I guess so? That was my first time having tea during an eat-out. It was quite good! Light, and fragrant. I would prefer just the original tea without any stuff added! *sip*

P/S: My friend ordered one with haggis as her side. THEIR HAGGIS IS SO GOOOOD! In case you don’t know what a haggis is:

Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep’s pluck heart, liver and lungs; minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal’s stomach and simmered for approximately three hours. Most modern commercial haggis is prepared in a sausage casing rather than an actual stomach.

*Definition is from Wikipedia.

It was my first time tasting it, definitely didn’t scare me out! It has that kind of lamb/sheep/mutton smell that I find lacking in some of the UK’s lamb meal XD. I love it! In contrast I have tasted haggis in another restaurant that was a total put-off!

Ending with a polaroid photo of me in front of the cafe.

Ending with a polaroid photo of me in front of the cafe.

I would say overall I am very satisfied with this cafe. Be it the food, the services and all. Made my morning very bright though that morning Edinburgh was very sunny but also super windy!

Till then, Happy no-more-holiday! :(

It’s another new year – 2015!

Yes, again, starting this way – I have been abandoning my little blog for many many months, until today I suddenly have the urge to write a little bit about my highlights in 2014.

January – My first time doing some paint works for my home. By me and only me. Feeling a lot pro

10898326_10152871412052420_5575663170283644072_n

This is before, just an ordinary plain wall, nothing interesting.

And tadaaa~! The effect after painting it with Nippon Momento Paint that gives a special effect like this. A bit fail though HAHA

10888490_10152871412342420_1935060583158628570_n

And a little close up. Didn’t really mix the paint well in time and there went the solid ends. =x

February – Chinese New Year! My favourite festival among all! Really love how this season brings each one of us in the family together, catching up with each other’s lives and not forgetting the feasting. *burp*

Selfie

This is my first year celebrating CNY in Cheongsam. Can’t believe as a Chinese I waited until the year I am twenty then I wear it.

March – Trip to Perth! Blogged quite a bit about it already. So yeah.

Glam photo of me at South Beach.

April, May, June – being driver and chef-at-home LOL. Not very happening. Oh ya in May my dad actually went bald for a Child-cancer-awareness campaign.

He used to have artistic-looking long and curly hair, and now all bald, maybe by this time his hair should have grown quite long already, but he looks really good in bald XD. He wouldn't have to worry to have no hair when he is old!

July – my favourite month for this year! Why? I have fallen in love that month HAHA! Have barely known him since 2012 but all this started with LINE RANGERS game request. This is fate.

And also watch the kids a.k.a juniors back in Dharma Club, GRSS work through their performance for Light Festival. Got 最佳手语奖 and 最佳精神奖 (?). I can’t remember but yeah.

September – Him leaving for university. And I MISSED SENDING HIM OFF AT THE AIRPORT, HOW FAIL I WAS TO LET THAT HAPPEN ==

And him sending me off at KLIA at the end of the month.

Smiling so happily that I was able to meet him after a month but sad in heart to part him in few hours time :(

Happy New Year! Fireworks from London!

And that’s about it for my 2014. Very very brief.

Let’s hope for a year as good as 2014, if not better. I guess I shall list down some of my resolutions and see if I can achieve them all in the year to come.

  1. Get a first class in my First year in Imperial College.
  2. Achieve ‘number 11′ abs.
  3. Start touring around Europe.
  4. Go travelling with him & much more in mind LOL.
  5. Constantly improving – personality, studies, love life, social circle, and the list goes on.

OMG I can’t believe it when I looked at the calendar. It’s been two months since I last updated, and I have yet to finish blogging my Perth trip. PROCRASTINATION ruled over me. Unfortunately, my old laptop isn’t doing well I can’t turn it on and so all my photos in there couldn’t be edited nor uploaded nor be posted. #killme

Anyway, this would probably be my last post of my Perth trip before I actually recover my photos back from that shitty-old lappy T_T

Ho’oponopono

Tags

The moment I publish this post I guess will be 9/7/14 already. Today I flew to KL to submit my UK visa application, with my dad. Somehow a lot of special things happen – things I should be grateful of. And also I started to have some thoughts for myself as well.

In recent years, my ears ache whenever the plane descends. And that pain can only be lightened by chewing gums or gummy bears, and be totally gone when I’m finally on ground. However today, something miraculous happened to my ears. After my parents shared with me about “Ho’oponopono”, an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness (quoted from Wikipedia) or in other words, “I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you.”, I learned to have a thankful heart to everything around me, either living or non-living things. So I would like to share my testimony here: Before the plane started to descend, I told my ears and nose that I love them. I thanked them for helping me balance so that I wouldn’t have an ear ache. I also thanked my nose for behaving nicely to me – not having serious flu, able to breathe normally. Guess what? My ears did not ache for the first time. Not even a slight feeling of discomfort. Maybe to some ‘scientific’ people, my situation was that my ears and nose just happened to be in good condition; but to me, I know myself well enough to believe that Ho’oponopono makes a difference in my life, and I’m experiencing it.

Even if you think it lacks scientific support, but there’s no harm to actually put this kind of ideology into practice, right? Being grateful is always a good thing. It may also help you in your life – being able to see things in a more positive angle, to complain less and to thank what you have in life. I believe that this also links to the Law of Attraction, which I think most of the people now know about it.

What you think will be what is going to happen.

To a certain extent, yes I believe in this. Having lots of positive energy pushes me through hard times in life. Believing that even in the worst situation you face, there’s still hope. You just need to have faith that things will get better, eventually. So, I now keep on reminding myself to be thankful. For eg: to talk good to the water you drink, water you use to take shower, or even the water content in your body. Have you ever heard that water crystallizations and your emotions are connected? This was suggested by Masaru Emoto. It was said that different emotions given or passed on to the water, the crystallizations formed are different. For example:- (photo and information credits here)

After saying “You are disgusting, I want to kill you.”

After giving love and thanks to the water.

These two pictures are clear enough, aren’t they?! There are more on the link I gave above, not an English version but I believe Google will help you out! :) Even two cup of experimenting waters can have such effects, what more to say the water content in our body? Continuously showering my body with loads of good words I believe that I will get healthier and prettier of course HAHA. Having said that it’s connected to the Law of Attraction, if I didn’t at first believe in this ideology, nothing would have happened to me. It is when my mind accepts it, it works for me.

The other thing was that I went to a Buddhist temple near Wisma MCA, there locates the 金身 (gold body/statue) of 宣化上人 (Venerable Master Hua). My father then went in and chanted and prayed to him. Just right after we had our lunch in the temple, he got a call from an unexpected friend, proposing a project that he worked so hard few years back to get it but failed. To me, I think this is the blessings that he received from the chant. He always asks me to chant, since I got explored to the teachings of Buddha at this young age, I should appreciate and make good use of it. I think I should consider his suggestions! HAHA actually I shouldn’t even have a second thought but just do it. I will try my best. Hence another goal for me to achieve!

We were so lucky as we got to meet a monk from Sri Lanka, too! He came all the way from LA to KL just to give blessings to people! It is this spirit of altruism and love that makes Buddhism so great. My father and I got his blessings. When he blessed me, I could feel the heat transferring to my head as if his energy is spared to me. Quite hard for me to describe but I think this is a fate that I was able to meet him in such a tight schedule. Ho’oponopono.

Lastly, I would like you, whoever that comes across this post, try this Ho’oponopono ideology out. It doesn’t matter if you are not a Buddhist. Hope it changes your life bit by bit to the better. May Buddha bless you.

Penang Trip 2013

OH-MAI-GOSH, it was June last year when I went to Penang. And now I’m finally blogging my trip here at my new site! <3 My photos are so nostalgic (though it was just last year)!! Apparently I couldn’t remember much of the details but I will just share my photos here cox my computer is crowded with photos. In case I delete them, I still have them here T__T Since it’s just a 3-day trip I will squeeze everything in just one post.

Somewhere near the hotel. Very pretty right?

Riding a bicycle and got on a ferry! How cool is that LOLOL !! Actually I think it is quite dangerous to ride a bicycle in Penang. The drivers drive really fast and they normally don’t stop for us :'(.

The next day we went to Batu Feringghi. We took taxi I think. My father introduced this driver to me. He’s quite good and all but I lost his contact number already LOLOL. Before we took a bus up to Batu Feringghi, driver uncle brought us to buy chocolate and coffee. However the places obviously are for tourists: like those tour guide will have some commission for bringing their groups there.

Must not forget Penang Laksa!! It’s so different from our Sarawak Laksa, nonetheless still quite nice! Asam based, with toppings like shallots and sardin. If you are the kind that cannot stand sardin, too bad you can’t enjoy the goodness. Btw, the one below Kek Lok Temple by the road side one is quite good. Heard that it is one of the best too!

End of story! See you another time Penang! <3

Photo taking is allowed in the submarine. However my hands shook too much and I got no one clear photo to show. Anyway, the inside of the submarine is very very very very hot and stuffy. A lot of cool stuff inside. A lot of meters and controls. Also they have super cramped beds and toilets. In conclusion, the submarine looks big but the inside is like a narrow cylinder. Not fun lah I think cox I’m super not into this kind of thing.

By when the food was taken before us, we were too hungry and finished all before I realised I haven’t taken a picture. I don’t know if it is because I do not eat fish and chips so often, I find the one served here quite tasteless. I prefer the 8 South Street one better. :X

Layered Butter Cake With Orange Cream

Tags

Alright it was my mom’s birthday two days ago, so I decided to make her her favourite cake – butter cake. But one thing is, a simple butter cake looks boring, and doesn’t have the birthday feeling to it.

So, I decided to make ‘my title’.

I tried a few recipes from the Internet and had different results, however most of them cracked and were a little dry until I tried this recipe here. Got it from that blog but the recipe is from Mrs Ng SK. I didn’t follow exactly the same but it is almost similar.

Old butter cake with cracks. But it tastes good!! And I think look not bad too!

Old butter cake with cracks. But it tastes good!! And I think look not bad too!

For the cake:

  1. 227gm unsalted butter  (I used Anchor’s hence 227gm), softened.
  2. 4 medium-sized eggs
  3. 50gm + 150gm sugar
  4. 200gm self-raising flour, sieved
  5. 60ml milk (I used Dutch Lady’s full cream milk)
  6. 1tsp vanilla extract
Ingredients getting themselves ready!

Ingredients getting themselves ready!

  1. Preheat the oven at 180°C. Prepare an 8 inch square pan. Grease the pan.
  2. Separate the yolks and whites. Cream butter and 150gm sugar until thick and fluffy. Add in vanilla extract and mix well. Add in yolks one by one until well incorporated.
  3. Beat egg whites in a dry, oil-free bowl until soft peaks form, gradually add in 50gm sugar and beat till stiff peaks form. Invert the bowl without the content falling and you’re done!
  4. Add in half of flour and mix well with low speed. Add milk in 2 additions and mix till well incorporated. Mix in the remaining flour.
  5. Add half the egg whites into your mixture, mix with slow speed. Fold in the remaining whites.
  6. Pour batter into pan and level.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes until cooked or skewer comes out clean. (I also reduced to 150°C because the top turned brown.)

PS: I do not have electric mixer so I creamed butter first and prepared flour then I beat egg whites.

For the Cream:

  1. Chill a metal bowl and whisk for a while until it is cold enough.
  2. Pour in whipping cream (1 cup of whipping cream makes 2 cups of whipped cream – I found this from many sites Google showed; I personally used like 500ml for this cake below.)
  3. Whip until a little soft and then add sugar and/or flavourings/colours. (I added orange oil like one tsp? I didn’t measure I just poured LOLOL)
  4. Whip till stiff. If you prefer it to hold its shape then beat a little longer, if not just get your desired consistency.

PS: I’m not a professional baker, the above steps for cream are from my trials. TQVM

My moist, fluffy and light butter cake!! Flat top just nice for spreading cream on top!!

My moist, fluffy and light butter cake!! Flat top just nice for spreading cream on top!!

Cut the square into half and then slice them into 4 pieces. Spread cream over each layer and when you reach the top, spread a little thicker. Not to forget the sides, working the same way. I gotta get my hands more stable. I want pretty cakes for my friends and family!!

I still suck at spreading cream so I made some texture to make it the look less awful LOLOL. Failed flowers on the side SO UGLY =.=
